Decisive Entrepreneurs Win
Did you catch The Apprentice this Monday?
This was a good example of what not to do as an entrepreneur. There was poor leadership from both teams. Michael and Lenny were the project managers during this episode.
Let’s take a look at how we can learn from this. Lenny didn’t listen to any input from his teammates and was totally unprepared when he met with the executives. He came right out and said to the team that there was nothing to discuss before meeting with the executives who would be judging their performance.
Because of the poor decision Lenny made, there was dead silence for a long time in the meeting with the executives. The executives were stunned that the team was not asking questions.
As an entrepreneur, this is a bad thing to do. You must decide to be prepared and get the team involved. Successful entrepreneurs depend on input from their team in order to make better decisions about the direction they will take.
During the rest of the task Lenny made more poor decisions and this was reflected in the way the project turned out. His team lost the task.
Now let’s discuss Michael. He was even worse when it came to decision-making. However he did take a different approach. He talked to the executives extensively and found out exactly what they wanted so his team could win. He also involved his team. The problem was on the execution side.
As a project manager you must make decisions quickly especially when you have little time for execution of a task. Michael took hours just to make up his mind about what paint colors to choose for the room they were painting. To make matters worse it took him forever to make a decision on all the other things that had to be done on this project.
Michael got lucky. He had a good team and he listened to their input. Even though his decisiveness was less than spectacular he still pulled off the task and won. His indecisiveness could have cost him the task. The team barely made after pulling an all nighter.
As an entrepreneur you must be able to make decisions quickly in order to succeed. Things move at a rapid pace these days and if you snooze you loose. Being indecisive will hurt you tremendously.
